FLOW THEORY

Flow Theory explores the concept of optimal human experience, characterized by a state of complete absorption in the activity.  This theory has found purchase in sports, recreation, arts, and leisure activities such as Scuba Diving.

When the participants at Point School are involved in scuba diving, it inherently lends itself to accessing flow. They find themselves immersed in an environment of wonder and excitement.  The weightlessness, the exotic marine life, the novelty of experiencing a world they have only seen from the surface all contribute to an unforgettable encounter with adventure and nature.

A key component to flow is the balance between challenge and skill. This is an area where many of our participants have historically been met with challenges.  The development of these specific areas of executive function is pivotal in the diving process. The technical side of diving such as buoyancy control, managing equipment, skill preparation for emergencies, and navigating underwater terrain provide continuous challenges for a diver to overcome. Through utilizing safe practice, direct communication, and skill development a diver will increase their preparedness for future dives. The participants at Point School learn to understand their subjective consciousness, therefore leading to increased awareness of emotions that drive their behavior. The team at Point School helps the participants develop strategies for these areas of growth.

The underwater environment presents itself with unique sensory stimuli that furthers the flow experience.   The gentle sway of plant life, the vibrant colors of the reefs, and the interplay of marine life create a multisensory spectacle for the enjoyment of a diver and the dive team.  This is all presented on the backdrop of ethereal underwater light.

When the participants are scuba diving, they must remain constantly alert and mindful.  They must monitor their depth, the rate at which they change depth, their air supply, and underwater hazards.  This state of awareness, coupled with the sensory richness leads to a state of attention where the participants become completely absorbed in the moment.

Puerto Rico has a rich underwater environment.  Every side of the island has flora and fauna that is unique to Puerto Rico.  At Point School we dive deep to explore distinctive, diverse places and challenge ourselves along the way.
